A Note on Aikawa Saki
If you've read one, you've read them all.
If there's an author who I love and read despite my better judgment, it's Aikawa Saki. I absolutely adore her artwork. However, her plots and characters are virtually all the same and filled with cliches. Knowing all that, I still seem to love each and every one of her works.

Sora's older sister appears perfect - she is super pretty, has good grades and there's seemingly nothing she can't accomplish. Sora herself is left with little more than a minority complex where she even stops trying: why bother with anything if her sister will always be better. In order not to be compared to her sister anymore, she decides to go to a high school far from home where people can get to know her without any comparisons.

As an Aikawa manga, I love the art and general storytelling. Unfortunately, there's also a lot of wasted potential here. Sora is a nice character - she starts out a bit bratty what with refusing to talk to her sister who essentially hasn't done anything other than (unintentionally) outshine her with everything. But she gets the chance to be herself at her new school, especially thanks to her co-volleyball team member Kataoka who gives her a push and doesn't take "I'm not good enough anyway" for an answer. By the end of the manga, she's really learned to be herself and not resent her sister, in fact, she even learns to understand her sister and makes sacrifices for her.

Sora's feelings for Kataoka are also shown in a nice and natural way. Even when he rejects her, although feeling sad, she accepts it and has the strength to continue being friends with him. Of course, it's a romance manga - Kataoka does eventually develop feelings for her and the way that came around was also nicely done. Just in general, I really liked the pace at which the characters feelings developed. Kataoka saw her as a friend and treated her as such, eventually realising he does like her more than that.

What really wasn't explored well enough were the other relationships, and it's such a shame because there really was a lot of potential. This manga could have been great with an extra volume or two.

We see most things from Sora's point of view and how she feels about her sister Sakura. She grows and learns, but what about Sakura? We get a glimpse of how she feels too; while she seems very popular, her sister isn't the only one who is intimidated by her. She struggles to make friends or find a boy who genuinely likes her. Add to it that her little sister suddenly seems to hate her, Sakura is a pretty lonely character who could easily be the main character of a story in her own right. But nothing with Sakura is resolved. Yes, Sora restores the relationship from her end, but Sakura is still left friendless and unhappy. Not to mention that she loses something dear to her at the end of the story and we don't even get to see how she deals with it. I would have liked to know so much more about what became of her and how the relationship between her and Sora continued.

Interestingly, it turns out that Kataoka is stuck in the same shoes as Sora; he too has a minority complex towards his older brother. It's thrown into the story so briefly that it almost feels like an afterthought of the author. Although Kataoka's relationship with his brother was resolved a little more satisfactorily, there was still too little of it all. In addition, one of the first scenes shows Kataoka crying - that's how he and Sora get to know each other. It is never answered why he was crying. Was it related to his brother? Some say he is still in love with a girl from his old school - is that the case? If so, we find out that he and Sakura are good friends - is she the one he was in love with as Sora suspects? Kataoka seems very adamant about Sakura being nothing more than a friend. I just feel there were many loose ends.

It's a shame, but I still really like this manga. There are also plenty of funny scenes between Sora and Kataoka, lots of lovely panels and art and Sora's attitude to improve herself just makes her a character who you can easily cheer for.

Ich weiß gar nicht was los ist, aber ich habe einfach soviel Glück in letzter Zeit mit Mangas.
Dieser hier war wieder zuckersüß, sowohl von der Story als auch vom Zeichenstil. Die Story hatte für einen Manga sogar Tiefe und die Hauptperson durchläuft eine Charakterentwicklung. Sie fühlt sich sehr im Schatten ihrer hübschen Schwester stehend und wechselt deshalb sogar die Schule. Dort lernt sie einen Jungen kennen, der ihr zeigt, dass sie nicht nur ihrem Schicksal bedauern sollte, sondern das ganze mal aus einer anderen Perspektive sehen sollte. Er hilft ihr mehr Selbstvertrauen zu entwickeln. Ich fand die zwischenmenschlichen Aktionen hier richtig schön gezeichnet und geschrieben. Die Beziehung der Schwestern und der (Schul)Freunde wurde richtig schön beschrieben und machte die Story interessant.
Der Zeichenstil war auch ganz mein Ding, auch wenn er mal ganz anders war als die Mangas, die ich sonst so gelesen habe. Die Augen waren eher mandelförmig, auch bei den Jungs. Ich war überrascht wie hübsch das aussah. Überhaupt war die Gestik und Mimik sehr aussagekräftig und die Szenen und Ausschnitte abwechslungsreich.
Ich kann es nicht erwarten, den nächsten Teil zu lesen.

Das Cover und der Klappentext haben mich sehr neugierig gemacht und ich wollte einfach wissen was in diesem Manga passiert. Der Einstieg ist mir auch sehr leicht gefallen. Man wird erstmal etwas in Soras Leben reingeführt und erfährt die ganze Ausgangsgeschichte.

Mir hat der Verlauf des Buches gut gefallen. Ich fand sie sehr spannend, besonders weil die Autorin immer wieder unvorhersehbare Momente für den Leser bereit hält und ich dadurch immer wissen wollte wie es weitergeht, sodass ich an den Seiten geklebt habe.

Sora habe ich sofort in mein Herz geschlossen. Ich konnte sie unglaublich gut verstehen und nachvollziehen was sie durchmacht. Ich habe mit ihr gefiebert und war teilweise sehr von ihren Reaktionen überrascht. Auch die meisten anderen Personen fand ich sehr nett. Und auch hier hält die Autorin Überraschungen bereit, denn manche Charaktere sind in ihrem Inneren nicht genau so, wie man es sich zuerst gedacht hat, sodass ich mich sehr gefreut habe sie auch von anderen Seiten kennen gelernt zu haben.

Der klare und detaillierte Zeichenstil hat mir sehr gut gefallen und auch die Darstellung der Gespräche fand ich sehr gelungen. Da man bei diesem Manga ganz genau erkennen kann wer was sagt oder denkt, ist er sehr gut für Einsteiger geeignet.

Die beigelegten Match-Me Karten finde ich unglaublich süß und sie dienen als Schmuck für mein Manga Regal.

Fazit:
Mich konnte "Wenn das Liebe ist" besonders durch seine Charaktere und den Zeichenstil von sich überzeugen und es hat großen Spaß gemacht es zu lesen! Ich kann es allen Romantik Fans nur empfehlen <3

Une belle découverte !
Ce manga n'annonçait rien pour me plaire : c'est un mélange de quiproquos et de secrets avec, en prime, la trope de la "soeur rivale" qui me trigger beaucoup. Mais, soit j'étais d'humeur, soit ça a bien été amené et traité, car contre toute attente, j'ai adoré.
(Par contre, j'ai raté l'info où on ne saura pas pourquoi il pleurait ?)
Le fait que la série soit en deux tomes aide pas mal aussi. Vraiment, il m'a énormément plu.

Damals zu meinen Teenagerzeiten habe ich es geliebt, Romance-Manga zu lesen...und was soll ich sagen, daran hat sich nichts geändert.
Auch wenn der Manga recht oberflächlich die Charaktere beschreibt und die Handlung nur so vor Klischees strotzt, hat er mit trotzdem gefallen. Locker leicht, etwas für Zwischendurch und dennoch fühl ich all the feels.
